During the waning years of the depression in a small Idaho community, I used to stop by Mr. Miller's roadside stand for farm fresh produce as the season made it available. Food and money were still extremely scarce and bartering was used extensively.
One day Mr. Miller was bagging some early potatoes for me. I noticed a small boy, delicate of bone and feature, ragged but clean, hungrily appraising a basket of freshly picked green peas. I paid for my potatoes but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas. I am a pushover for creamed peas and new potatoes. Pondering the peas, I couldn't help overhearing the conversation between Mr. Miller and the ragged boy next to me.
"Hello Barry, how are you today?"
"H'lo, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Jus' admirin' them peas ... surelook good."
"They are good, Barry. How's your Ma?"
"Fine. Gittin' stronger alla' time."
"Would you like to take some peas home?"
"No, Sir. Got nuthin' to pay for 'em with."
"Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?"
"All I got's my prize marble here."
"Is that right? Let me see it."
"Here 'tis. She's a dandy."
"I can see that. Hmmmmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort ofgo for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?"
"Not zackley . but almost."
"Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble."
"Sure will. Thanks Mr. Miller."
Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over to help me. With a smile she said, "There are two other boys like him in our community, all three are in very poor circumstances. Jim just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes, or whatever. When they come back with their red marbles, and they always do, he decides he doesn't like red after all and hesends them home with a bag of produce for a green marble or an orange one, perhaps."
I left the stand smiling to myself, impressed with this man. A short time later I moved to Colorado but I never forgot the story of this man, the boys, and their bartering. Several years went by, each more rapid that the previous one. Just recently I had occasion to visit some old friends in that Idaho community and while I was there learned that Mr. Miller had died. They were having his viewing that evening and knowing my friends wanted to go, I agreed to accompany them.
Upon arrival at the mortuary we fell into line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whatever words of comfort we could. Ahead of us in line were three young men. One was in an army uniform and the other two wore nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts ...all very professionallooking.
They approached Mrs. Miller, standing composed and smiling by her husband's casket. Each of the young men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her and moved on to the casket. Her misty light blue eyes followed them as, one by one, each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm hand over the cold pale hand in the casket. Each left themortuary awkwardly, wiping his eyes.
Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and mentioned the story he had told me about the marbles. With her eyes glistening, she took my hand and led me to the casket. "Those three young men who just left were the boys he told you about. They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim "traded" them. Now, at last, when Jim could not change his mind about color or size ... they came to pay their debt." "We've never had a great deal of the wealth of this world," sheconfided, "but right now, Jim would consider himself the richest man in Idaho."
With loving gentleness she lifted the lifeless fingers of her deceased husband. Resting underneath were three exquisitely shined red marbles.
We will not be remembered by our words, but by our kind deeds.
Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath.
Today... I wish you a day of ordinary miracles....
A fresh pot of coffee you didn't make yourself.....
An unexpected phone call from an old friend....
Green stoplights on your way to work.....
The fastest line at the grocery store.....
A good sing-along song on the radio ....
Your keys right where you left them.

" Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt." - The Special Olympics Oath
Dear Friends,Greetings from Team Zest! We are a group of youths involved in organising a walkathon to raise funds for Special Olympics Singapore. As some of you may have heard, this organisation provides year- round sports training for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. It also provides support for our local Special Olympians to take part in the Special Olympics Games and other international competitions. Through sports training and competition, the Special Olympics Movement offers a platform for people with intellectual disabilities to develop improved physical fitness, greater self-confidence and a more positive self-image.Having seen the children in the athletes programme in action before, we were truly impressed by their dedication, perseverance and sportsmanship. They proved to us that people with intellectual disabilities are far more capable of physical activities and sports than most people expect. We sincerely hope that you will support these worthy athletes in their sporting pursuits. Funds raised through the walkathon will contribute to the sustenance of quality training programs for these athletes and rental of sports facilities. We believe that with your support, we will be able to raise the profile of Special Olympics and encourage more Singaporeans with intellectual disabilities to take part in sports as a means of becoming physically fit, productive and respected members of society. We will like to extend our warmest invitation to you to join in the walkathon. Below are the details of the event:
Event Name : "Brave in the Attempt"

It will be good to confirm your attendance with us so that we can prepare the tickets beforehand to facilitate collection on the event day itself. We hope that you and your friends can join us in this worthy cause! Pls do help us forward this email to your friends and spread the word around. If you have any enquiries with regards to the walkathon, feel free to drop us a mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.We look forward to seeing you!
Regards,Team ZestBrave in the Attempt - Fund-Raising Walkathon for Special Olympics SingaporeA Citibank-YMCA Youth For Causes project organised by Citibank and the YMCA of Singapore. Supported by the People's Association Youth Movement.
The walkathon will commence at 8am at Bishan Community Centre (beiside Bishan bus interchange) and end at approximately 10am at Raffles Junior College.

ok that's all.. anyone interested?
Arloz, it must've been ages since I blogged...
Kz anyway in case you switched off today as I was talking....
Please donate as much as you can afford to the Children Cancer Fund. Don't feel obliged but if you can afford it, why not. $8 will be good, anything more will be even better. Even if you feel that the CCF is quite far away from you, at least we could help our fellow college mates to keep their promise? Cos imagine such a big institution end up raising a minute sum that isn't even enough for a child to have a bone marrow transplant. Not that I'm pro-school but since you probably won't donate to NKF any soon so why not help another organisation in need, can ask your parents too.
Next thing's class outing! Hope this time more will turn out if not seriously, we'll be like slapping ourselves in the mouths, complaining bout lack of class outing then nobody turn up. Anyway, considering cost and convenience..
Class Outing, 8th August, Monday, after National Day celebrations in school.
Suggested activities include:
5) Ice skating
=) ok, shoot. Anyway if the first four activities are wanted, I suggest Marina Square? The cinema is just beside Superbowl, and Superbowl is just opposite the Pool centre, and the
Pool Centre is located in the same unit as the arcade. =) Advised to bring a change of clothes, dun really fancy parading up and down in uni, esp if you wanna go arcade and pool. Ice skating anyone? haha, the only place i noe is jec, haven skated in exactly a year. For your info, the bowling alley there has closed down as far as i can recall. Cine's cathay bowl is long non-existant and unless you wanna travel all the way to Victor's at marina..=S Minyi suggested eating there lahz, but the last time i ate there with my frens in june, 2 had severe food poision, one was sent to hospital =S. Anyway, yeps got anything just say, as long as it's practical and well, not very costly. Haha, anyway apparently all our activities need money.
For those who have something on you all can prob join us later? Sch ends around 11, we can go lunch, catch a movie (will bewitched be screened by then?) then the more interactive stuff wait for the rest to come? =)
Lolxz, as you can see the whole entry is in yellow. Do give your suggestions and ideas for fac outing to awyong anytime you feel inspired by something kz! Lolxz, and we're contemplating a fac dance trial session with you guys as well as probablt michelle's class 7D, once the new dance's ready (soon!) so do support yea =)
AND lastly, support Jun Hong on national day! He'll be parading in the national day costume design competition!
lol how nice ((:
where is everybody??? it's sad with only 4 ppl online...
yup as all of the nyaa ppl shd know, there's an invitation to join the ocip (india) at the end of the year. if we decide to join, we will be involved in a section (that we have to plan) which will be considered as our initiative. we will be linked up with the cip unit and automatically go for the trip itself.
who are interested in this? i shd be emailing mdm fok tmr (wed). maybe can submit the names together then we don't have to flood her email.
harloee stop tapping my back. lol. makes me feel so dumbb when I have no idea who did it okayyy. =PpP

Okay so are we going to decide on when to watch chocolate factory?? haha. Must do it sooooon. Think we all have to relax a bit (: Well! What to expect of JC life? It's tough, it may be getting tougher, but 75, hang in there! Anyway I'm sure you guys can do it la. We so zaii.. Results all above level average one. But sorry lehZ, I pull down the class average =X hehe.We all jiayou okayy? -big 75 hug-
oOooh~ maybe we can all go to the council sessions (whatever you call it) on wednesdays. lol . then we can cheer our hearts out, practise the mass dances and have lots of fun! =D=D [see... i so nice help the councillors promote. lol]
